Back by popular demand!!

Hi strangers! It's been a looooooong time since I've visited this space. Life with 1 chef, 3 boys, a kitty, and a yarn shop keeps me running all day, and by this time of night, when things have finally settled down, sitting at the computer is pretty much the last place I want to be! However, I know that there are mosherboy fans both near and far that would love for even a bit of sporadic posting, so I'm here to say…I'll try harder!

And so, without further delay- a few shots from a recent beach trip. We took advantage of a rare day when all 5 of us had the day off and set out to one of our favorite coastal spots, just south of Bodega Bay. It happened to be a Monday, so the beach was super quiet and peaceful. The air was warm and still, with just enough wispy clouds in the sky to keep you from feeling scorched. We read, knitted, played soccer, built sand "booby traps", and slid down dunes. It was a lovely day.

Quote of the day

This exchange occured just earlier this evening when I asked Patch to feed Eve, our cat.

"Mom, do I have to fatten her up for butchery?".

Now, Patch still speaks with a bit of a lisp and a funny little boy accent, so it is easy to misunderstand him sometimes.

"What?", I asked, not quite sure of what he had just said.

"You know. Fatten her up! For butchery!"

That's when I recalled that we had just recently finished reading Charlotte's Web and that they were working their way through Little House on the Prairie in 1st grade. Clearly animal husbandry was on his mind.

After a conversation comparing caring for livestock vs pets, Patch got the cat her nightly kibble and went to bed contemplating vegetarianism.

Ode to Hermes

by Sam Mosher

Hermes
God of thieves and trickery,
travelers and merchants,
Hermes the clever one,
The herald of the gods
A son of Zeus
And of Maia, a Titan's daughter.
Fleet of foot and quick of mind,
Full of eloquence and cunning.

He travels freely,
Between the world of god and mortal.
He helps the dying man complete his final journey
With a flash he can vanish,
Beneath his magic cloak,
May you, O Hermes
live forever in neverending glory

Hermes the clever one
The herald of the gods.

Eleven

My boy Sam is eleven, and has been for a few weeks now. The boys do not read this blog, so he does not know that I have been remiss in putting up his birthday post. Partially, this is due to general birthday exhaustion, and life just getting in the way. But I think it is also due to a bit of confusion on my part as to what to write about 11.  It is definitely an in between age. Not a kid any longer, but not yet a teen…has there been a pop song written about the tween years yet? If not, maybe I'll jump into the fray.

So far, Sam at eleven is…well, mostly like Sam has always been. Kind, easy going, energetic, and mellow. But with more attitude. Sometimes, much more attitude. He gets annoyed at his brothers more readily these days, although most days I can hardly fault him for this. He also gets annoyed at Jeff and I often- what with us asking him to change his socks on a regular basis and play his violin, we are, I'm sure,  so totally annoying!!

A girl called him the other day. They went, with her mom, out for a bike ride, and had pizza. It kind of seemed like a date and when they dropped him off, the girl smiled at him in this dazzling way that made me feel kind of like- Hey, you hussy, that is my boy! But, of course, i just smiled and thanked them for having him for the afternoon.

So, I think that these years are probably confusing for both the kid and the parents. Overall, though, I am so thankful for Sam. He has taught me so much over these past 11 years. He is such a good person. We are all so lucky to have him, as a son, as an older brother. What an amazing person he is becoming.

Happy Eleven years around the sun, Samuel!!

Quote of the day

Today I was flipping through a Martha Stewart magazine when Atticus wandered over. "What is that?" he asked, looking down at the page. "It's soft boiled eggs, on a bed of crispy kale", I responded. "Ohhh", he said with wide eyes, "Yuuummmmmm!"

Well, I must be doing something right!!
